On the 1st of March 2024, I'll collect 50 letters from an ancient post box located at Post Office Bay, Isla Floreana in the Galapagos Islands, and deliver them by hand across the globe over the next 12 months. I'll be doing this to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).<\/p><p>My inspiration came from my father, Eric (in New Zealand) who passed away in 2022 having battled MND for over eight years.<\/p><p>As the Galapagos Postman, I want to reconnect with people the old-fashioned way \u2013 by personally delivering these handwritten letters to people I\u2019ve never met in places I\u2019ve never been. And to highlight the loss of mobility and freedom of movement that my father and other MND suffers lose. Something we shouldn't take for granted.<\/p><p>Operational since 1793, the postbox was originally used by sailors on multi-year ventures who left letters for their loved ones hoping they would be collected by passing ships on their way back to England, the USA, or wherever their home port was. This longstanding tradition has continued. Today, visitors to the island still leave letters and postcards so fellow travellers can collect and hand-deliver them, telling the tale of how they got there.\u00a0<\/p><p>As I hold both New Zealand and British citizenship, I'm raising funds for MND charities in both countries. 100% of profits from the T-shirt sales will go to UK MND Charities. That\u2019s 28% of the \u00a325 purchase price, with \u00a37.08 for every t-shirt sold going to charity.<\/p><p>If you'd prefer to make a cash donation, please donate anything you can via my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mnd-new-zealand-fundraise.raisely.com\/thegalapagospostmanchallenge2024\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MND NZ fundraising page<\/a>.
